I had the pleasure of attending the annual benefit event for Mobile Loaves and Fishes along with their new venture - Habitat on Wheels. I had the pleasure of meeting the President, Alan Graham, and a couple that Habitat on Wheels has helped.
Contributions pay for the trailers, but the residents pay for their lot and utilities. It's a much better solution than than weekly-rate motels.
Each tenant also gets a "Guardian Befriender" to help them out.
It seems to be working. Its taken 15 families and individuals of the streets of Austin with only 2 failures so far. It gives the homeless a chance again.
HoW's big vision is a Habitat on Wheels RV Park community which they are working on with the City. You can see the plan here.
