New rule for electronic stability control shortchanges consumers

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today issued a final rule mandating electronic stability control (ESC) in all vehicles – which, amazingly, requires systems that are less advanced than what automakers are already installing in vehicles currenty on the road.

NHTSA has the authority to issue technology-forcing standards, but in this case, it is undercutting the likelihood that manufacturers will continue selling the superior technology now being offered to consumers.

Public Citizen President Joan Claybrook issued a statement on this issue; to read the full statement, click here.
