Contact these Texas Senators to support electronic waste recycling bill

The State Legislature is starting to show interest in passing legislation to require that computer-makers provide free, convenient recycling of their old products. The reason is that Texas Campaign for the Environment was able to convince Dell to get off the sidelines and start pushing for state legislation on electronic waste.

One bill, HB 2714 (Bonnen/Gattis) passed the House Committee on Environmental Regulation unanimously on Wednesday, but without TVs. The other bill, SB 1324 (Watson) will be heard in the Senate Committee on Tuesday, April 10th.

Why Should TVs Be Covered in the Legislation?

TVs have mercury or lead inside like computer monitors. In February 2009 the TV signal to going to switch to digital. So anyone who doesn’t have cable, a satellite dish or a digital-ready TV is going to have to buy a converter box or a new TV. We don’t want a flood of old TVs going into our landfills to eventually leak into our water. (Click here for detailed fact sheet.)

Here's How to Take Action

These State Senators sit on the Senate committee that will debate this legislation on April 10. Please contact them, especially if you are a constituent with the following message:

"Please support SB 1324 to require producer takeback recycling and work to include TVs in the bill. We don’t want toxins from computers or TVs in our landfills."

    This has been a big issue for years. Glad to see Dell taking a leadership role in getting this rolling.
